What type of business is Toast best for?

Toast is ideal for independent food and drink vendors like restaurants, cafes, and bars because of its specialized hospitality features and affordable packages.

Toast's in-house delivery package, Toast Go, makes the POS an asset to vendors offering click-and-collect, takeaway, and home delivery services too. However, mobile or pop-up businesses may benefit more from Square POS instead, as it offers a complimentary mobile credit card reader as part of its free plan.

Toast's POS System Pricing

Toast offers five main pricing plans and a separate software package for delivery businesses. There's a Toast tier for every type of business, whether they're just getting started or managing multiple locations.

As far as value goes, Toast is great. We gave Toast a near-perfect value score of 4.8/5 (only slightly shy of Square's perfect 5/5), because of its quality free package, and reasonable transaction rates. • Quick Start Bundle – This tier is free to get started on but charges 2.99% + 15¢ for all transactions. It offers a hardware bundle and basic POS features and is ideal for single-location restaurants.
• Core – This package costs businesses $799 upfront and an additional $69 per month and includes software, a POS hardware terminal, a tap payment device, a router, and support.
• Growth – Retailing at $165 per month, this tier includes is targeted toward full-scale restaurants and includes a range of advanced capabilities like online ordering and delivery.
• Toast New Restaurant Basics – If you're just getting started, this plan will cover your bases, offering cloud-based point-of-sale, payroll, scheduling, and employee management tools all for $110 per month.
• Toast Custom Plan – Finally, for enterprise businesses with advanced POS news, Toasts Custom Plan gives users access to its full suite of features alongside over 100 integrations. As the name implies, this package comes with custom pricing.
• Toast Go – If you're not after POS features, Toast Go supports online ordering, takeout, gift cards, and contactless deliveries. The service is free for the first three months, but the digital ordering feature will cost $50 per month after, while the gift card feature will cost $25 per month.

Toast changed the name of its pricing plans and removed references to its Pay-as-you-go-Starter, Standard Starter, and Essentials plans in 2023.

Processing fees

Toast also charges processing fees, depending on your chosen plan and the type of transaction. The transaction fees are as follows:

• 2.99% + 15 cents for Toast's pay-as-you-go option
• 2.49% + 15 cents if you pay for hardware upfront
• 3.5% + 15 cents for card-not-present transactions

Hardware fees

Hardware also comes as a premium for most of Toast's plans. These fees are as follows:

• $609 for Toast's Handheld Starter Kit
• $799 for Toast's Countertop Starter Kit
• $999 for Toast's Guest Self-Service Starter Kit

Toast's POS System Core Features

Toast offers some of the best restaurant features in the industry. Here's a breakdown of the POS's major capabilities.

Tableside Order Management

Toast enables servers to accept orders from customers and relay them to kitchen workers, all while still at the table. Once the meal is ready in the kitchen, the server will receive a notification on their tablet, increasing efficiency. When customers are ready to pay, the server can then take tableside payments, with EMV card processing supported, as well as Samsung Pay. Online Ordering

Toast's dynamic software also supports an online ordering option, in the form of a public-facing website that guests can use to place their orders using a menu updated in real time.

Users can save their profiles and credit card information, while the interface connects to Toast's delivery dispatch feature, letting your employees deliver the order if needed. The online site can be tailored to your restaurant's branding, too.

Gift card features and loyalty programs are supported as well, whether the user is present in person or online.

Menu Management

Finding a POS that keeps up with seasonal menus can be a pain. But with Toast, menus can be updated from any device logged into the POS software, including terminals and smartphones. Toast offers email marketing features integrated directly into its POS systems. Since employees clock in and out, their hours are tracked automatically, including both regular and overtime pay. However, there's another added benefit to logging this data: Weekly, monthly or even annual reports can be compiled automatically, offering insights into employee life-cycles and performance.

Employee Management

In busy food service businesses, keeping tabs on employees can be a headache. Fortunately, Toast offers a suite of team management features, allowing businesses to create one profile for each employee. Employees can clock in and clock out through the POS software, and payroll will automatically log their hours worked, saving managers manual labor. Cash and credit card tips earnings are factored in as well.

Third-party integrations

While Toast's feature set is already pretty expansive, the POS also offers a variety add-ons beyond its basic POS software. You can find the full list of integrations online, but some popular options include the business insights tool Compeat, the ordering app PayTronix and the delivery tool GrubHub.

However, you'll need to consider which ones are essential for your business as each add-on represents an additional monthly charge.

Toast also makes a Flex screen for use in your kitchen.

The kitchen display instantly shows orders to your kitchen staff the moment they are taken by your servers. This means you can get orders filled quicker and more accurately than using the old-fashioned pen-and-paper setup you might be used to.

Toast Flex for Guest

The Flex for Guest gives your customers an 8-inch screen to show what they've ordered, and what they need to pay.

A big, simple display can help eliminate errors by showing your customers exactly what they've ordered on your system – your customers won't need to fret about whether your servers took down their coffee order with soy milk rather than oat milk, for example.

Setup and Customer Support

Toast POS support is available 24/7 in the US, both over the phone and through an online portal that can connect users with live representatives. The POS's knowledge center ‘Toast Classroom' also provides useful resources like live training and on-demand sessions on a range of topics.

However, unlike POSs like Square and TouchBistro, Toast doesn't offer live chat, email support, or automatic backups — resulting in the POS receiving the worse score for customer support on record.

Alternatives to Toast POS
